Poems and Quotes

Below are some favorite poems and quotes & inspirations of mine. They are in no particular order, as I add them when I can- I have left them so you can right click and copy and paste them to a word document to save for yourself.

When I was struggling, I would type up the quotes on nice paper, cut them out and tape them all over my house. To the doorways, the walls, by the light switches…even after they had been there a while, and I knew what they said, just seeing them helped me get back into a better frame of mind when the pain was so deep. Sticky notes are such a cool invention…I didn’t realize that it truly was helping others in my life, until I quit doing it…my husband commented on how he missed all the little notes I used to stick in his lunch box. He never knew if it was going to be a joke, or something inspirational, he just knew I loved him enough to do that one tiny thing extra. So in my helping myself to see past the pain, I was helping my family also, even if my teenage son groaned every time I stuck something new to his doorway~

For some moments in life there are no words.

♥ ♥ ♥ ʚϊɞ ♥ ♥ ♥

We adapt, we accept, but we never get over it!

I am often asked, when will the pain go away, my honest answer is never.

It changes intensity, like the waves in the ocean, as we all struggle to get to Grief Beach!

Tears If tears could build a stairwell and memories were a lane, I would walk right up to Heaven and bring you home again. No farewell words were spoken no time to say good-bye . You were gone before I knew it, and only God knows why. My heart still aches in sadness, and secret tears still flow. What it means to lose you, no one will ever know. Anonymous~

The Beach In The Sky

I closed my eyes.
Felt the warmth of the sun on my face.
All the grief and pain
Was simply too hard to erase.

I could smell the ocean in the air.
I opened my eyes only to see you far off in the distance.
I knew it was you there.

I called out your name
As I ran to you.
My prayers had been answered.
It was all too good to be true.

Beautiful as always
You smiled and held me so near.
This moment was happening
It was all perfectly clear.

You laughed and said
“I’m happy you’re here. Welcome to my beach in the sky,
But you can’t stay forever.”
As a big sister always knows why.

“You see there is a little place at my beach in the sky.
It’s called Heaven and that’s where I live.
I am happy and content
And have no one else to forgive.”

“I dance in the sun and play in the waves.
I collect seashells as I watch the sunrise and set
All of my days”.

“I know no more hate, sorrow or grief.
I only know love and peace.
And I stand firmly with my God on that belief.”

“You have not yet learned what it takes.
You can’t be with me on my beach in the sky.
Just because you think you have faith
You still have not learned why.”

“Go back to your world and do what you can.
Be kind and gentle to each and every man.
Have a compassionate heart.
Remember my words as we now must part.”

“Little things matter.
Be the best you can be.
Take great care with others
As you would a seashell at sea.
Be helpful, be strong
And never ask why.
That’s all it takes
To reach my beach in the sky.”

I opened my eyes
And felt the mean Spring Winter cold.
It was all an illusion
Everything I had just been told.

The snow flurries fell.
I was not on a beach
But was back in my hell.
It could have all been a dream
Until I looked down
And discovered a seashell.

Grief is like a ball of string, you start at one end and wind. Then the ball slips through your fingers and rolls across the floor. Some of your work is undone but not all. You pick it up and start over again, but you never have to begin again at the end of the string. The ball never completely unwinds. You’ve made some progress. -Author Unknown

In Memory
Those we Love remain with us,
for Love itself lives on.
Cherished memories never fade,
because a loved one is gone.
Those we Love can never be,
more than a thought apart.
For as long as there is a memory,
they’ll live on in our heart.

Two Wolves
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, ‘My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.’ The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: ‘Which wolf wins?’ The old Cherokee simply replied, ‘The one you feed.’

Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the star shine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

I’ll Lend You A Child
“I’ll lend you for a little time a child of mine, he said.”
For you to love – while he lives,
and mourn for when he’s dead.
It may be six or seven years,
or twenty-two or three, but will you,
till I call him back, take care or him for me?
He’ll bring his smiles to gladden you,
and should this stay be brief.
You’ll have his lovely memories as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay,
since all from earth return.
But there are lessons taught down there
I want this child to learn.
I’ve looked this world over
in search for teachers true.
And from the throngs that crowd life’s lanes,
I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love,
nor count the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come
to call to take him back again?”
I fancied that I heard then say,
“Dear Lord, Thy will be done.
For all the joy Thy child shall bring,
the risk of grief we’ll run.
We’ll shelter him with tenderness;
we’ll love him while we may.
And for the happiness we’ve known
forever grateful stay.
But should the angels call for him
much sooner than we’ve planned.
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes
and try to understand.”

What you think of how your day will be when your first wake up is how your day will be. Choose to have a good day.
When your problems seem insurmountable, take a deep breathe, relax, and find one positive thing in your life.
Focusing on the positive brings positive into your life.
When given a diagnosis of cancer, instead of asking “Why me?” ask “What can I learn from this experience?” or “What can others learn from my going through this?”
Today is a wonderful day. Repeat this statement when you wake up and every time you feel low.
It will boost your mood and your day!
Everyday that you wake up is a good day. Live it to the fullest.
There is nothing as empowering as setting a daily goal and then attaining it. If it happens to get you closer to your big goal, that’s even better. Who knows better than you how you feel?
How you will feel each day is also up to you.
Choosing to have a good day will make the day better.
Will you choose to have a wonderful day?

Don’t use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved.
Don’t be afraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless, a treasure you can carry easily.
Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you’ve been, but also where you are going.
Don’t shut love out of your life by saying it’s impossible to find.
The quickest way to receive love is to give; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly, and the best way to keep love is to give it wings.
Don’t be afraid to encounter risk. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave~

One Little Candle I lit a candle tonight, in honor of you Remembering your life, and all the times we’d been through. Such a small little light the candle made until I realized how much in darkness it lit the way. All the tears I’ve cried in all my grief and pain what a garden they grew; watered with human rain. I sometimes can’t see beyond the moment, in hopeless despair. But then your memory sustains me, in heartaches repair. I can’t wait for the tomorrow, when my sorrows ease. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it’s the only way to live life completely.
How do we comprehend peace within pain how can we love without limits?
What ever you think you can or can’t do, your right!
The purpose of life is a life of purpose.
We can’t always choose our circumstances, but we can choose our attitudes towards them.
Feelings are much like waves, we can’t stop them from coming, but we can choose which one to surf.
You can’t have a better tomorrow if you are thinking about yesterday all the time.
Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself… I, not the events have the power to make me happy or unhappy today.
I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is gone, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet.
I have only one day, today, and I am going to be happy in it!

You can shed tears that he is gone. Or you can smile because he has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that he’ll come back. Or you can open your eyes and see all he’s left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him. Or you can be full of love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday. Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember home and only that he’s gone. Or you can cherish his memory and  live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, Or you can do what he’d want. Smile, and open your eyes, love and go on. Gone but not forgotten.

My Darling Daughter

My baby girl is gone now. Her face again I’ll never see.

Why was she taken away When I needed her with me?

I loved to hold her in my arms and smell the sweetness of her breath.

What I feared the most came true when I had to face her death.

My arms are empty now and so is a piece of my heart. I wish she was still here with me but I guess it was time for us to part.

I’ll never see her play with dolls ride a bike or even smile. She’ll never be a girl scout or a bride Walking down the aisle.

Everyone says it’s time to let go of the dreams and of you too. That’s easier said than done When part of me died with you.

I’m sorry that I didn’t see the signs of your death. I’d sell my soul if I could feel the warmth of your sweet breath.

I can never let go of you or the beauty in your face. A tiny piece of heaven on earth for which there was no place.

In Memory of my Daughter Caron Clarissa Bryant May 28, 1988 – June 15, 1988 Lisa Bryant~

If Tomorrow Never Comes
If I knew it would be the last time that I’d see you fall asleep, I would tuck you in more tightly and pray the Lord, your soul to keep. If I knew it would be the last time that I see you walk out the door, I would give you a hug and kiss and call you back for one more. If I knew it would be the last time I’d hear your voice lifted up in praise, I would video tape each action and word, so I could play them back day after day. If I knew it would be the last time, I could spare an extra minute or two to stop and say “I love you,” instead of assuming you would KNOW I do. If I knew it would be the last time I would be there to share your day, well I’m sure you’ll have so many more, so I can let just this one slip away. For surely there’s always tomorrow to make up for an oversight, and we always get a second chance to make everything right. There will always be another day to say our “I love you’s”, And certainly there’s another chance to say our “Anything I can do’s?” But just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get, I’d like to say how much I love you and I hope we never forget, Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young or old alike, And today may be the last chance you get to hold your loved one tight.. So if you’re waiting for tomorrow, why not do it today? For if tomorrow never comes, you’ll surely regret the day, That you didn’t take that extra time for a smile, a hug, or a kiss and you were too busy to grant someone, what turned out to be their one last wish.
So hold your loved ones close today, whisper in their ear, Tell them how much you love them and that you’ll always hold them dear.
Take time to say “I’m sorry,” “please forgive me,” “thank you” or “it’s okay”.
And if tomorrow never comes, you’ll have no regrets about today

The woman who was my midwife and helped Brandon into this world, gently and quietly at home, was also the one who was at our home the day of Brandon’s passing; helping him to move gently and quietly from this world. She spoke this poem, and the one that follows, which are taken from the works of Kahlil Gibran, shortened to reflect the passing of a child.
“Speak to us of Children”
And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, “Speak to us of Children.” And he said: Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you. And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the Archer’s hand be for gladness; for even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.
“The Secret of Death”
We all wonder about the secret of death,
But how shall we find it unless we seek it in the heart of life.

The owl whose night bound eyes are blind unto the day, cannot unveil the mystery of light.

If you would indeed behold the spirit of death,
open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one,
even as the river and the sea are one.

For what is it to die – but to stand naked in the wind,
and melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing,
but to free the breath from it’s restless tides.

That it may rise and expand
and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence
shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountain top,
then you shall begin to climb.

And when the earth shall claim your limbs,
then you shall truly dance…

To My Mother, I see you each time you shed a tear, I catch it and kiss you, I hope that you know that I’m near. This place is so beautiful, There’s so much to see! I know that someday you’ll be here with me. The angels were singing when I arrived! Jesus was there with His arms open wide! The snow and the rain are just my confetti. I know you’ll be coming and I want to be ready. When you feel the wind, it’s me walking by. I can run and skip now, I can even fly! When the blossoms and leaves fall into your hair, It’s me planting kisses, yes, I put them there! The birds are singing to keep you company, They’re especially for you with love from me. I know that you miss me and feel so alone, Until the great day when you finally come home Please remember as the seasons change from one to another, I’ll always love you. You’re my friend and my mother. (from someone on Facebook?)

And The Angels Spread Their Wings

My heart is filled with love and joy.
The kind a brand new baby brings.
Suddenly, it’s all taken away,
And the Angels spread their wings.
There’s a new face in Heaven.
Upon her head is a golden ring.
All of Heaven is rejoicing,
And the Angels spread their wings.
Right in the middle of Heaven,
Gentle Jesus softly sings
To all the children of Heaven
And the Angels spread their wings.
He places her in a cradle,
Suspended by silver strings.
Created especially for her
And the Angels spread their wings.
An Angel watches over her,
As gently the cradle swings.
Then she smiles a peaceful smile,
And the Angels spread their wings.
I ask you to take my child’s hand,
And show her the beauty in all things.
Please tell her that I love her,
And the Angels spread their wings.

    Thank you for this site…
It was 7 years ago today that I lost my son’s father… and in Jan. It will be 10 years that I lost my own daughter…
The pain and grief is so strong…I feel so weak…
Some days I just want to stay in bed… The tears flow so easy… my heart still aches everyday…

I send you love and light on your journey. Learn to replace the pain with happy memories, each time the pain comes, tell yourself to stop bringing that memory and replace it with a happy memory. Bit by bit, it works. Sandy

Hi there, I am looking for poem called “October” which I found about 7 years ago on a grief support site for sibling loss. I can’t find it anywhere :( It really touched me and I was hoping to put the poem to music and play it on my guitar. If anyone knows of this poem, please let me know. I remember it talked about growing up together as brother and sister, and I remember it talked about holding hands, and something about the stars. Thank you for any help you can offer.

All I can say is Wow. I’ve been searching for inspiring quotes and poems to help me cope with the loss of my sweet, handsome boyfriend. He was a victim of a drunk driver exactly a month ago. Words cannot explain how much I miss him or the amount of pain I feel knowing I’ll never hold or kiss him again. I found poems on this site that comforted me in ways no one else could. I even found some to share with my boyfriend’s mother, who is grieving the loss of her only child.
Thank you so very much for posting these beautiful poems. I cannot thank you enough. I truly wish I could personally thank you because I smiled more reading these poems than I have since the accident. God bless you!
    With gratitude and love,

Thank you so much for the beautiful poems and quotes, very uplifting. The past few years have been very challenging … 8 January 2011 I lost my aunt (my confidant) 13 March 2012 my brother was diagnosed with cancer, 1 May 2012 my mom passed on and 3 weeks ago (19 June 2013) we gathered around my brother’s bed to say farewell. I am just holding on to “till we meet again” … still miss them so much … I have copied one of the poems (In Memory…) to a word document with pics of them all around – reminding me that as long as I have a memory, they live on in my heart. Thank you :-)

  36. Cynthia

I came across your website, and began reading. Many of the poems are uplifting as I have not lost my loved one to death, but he is a missing person. Most people don’t realize how hard it is when your child becomes one of the missing. It is often believed that grief is only for those who’s loved one has been called to heave. I looked at someone who said to me the other day at least he is not in heaven, and replied at least you know where your loved one is, He is safe in the arms of the lord, my son is safe in nobodies arms, and we do not know where he is. Thanks again for the poetry.

The journey we take thru grief is lifelong and heart wrenching. As you move through your grief, you will learn to shift from the pain of wanting him back, to feeling the warmth of his love still remaining in your heart. You will learn to do things he liked and experience things with him, right there in your heart with each step you take. Baby steps. Sending you love and light on your journey!

Cathrine, I lost my 15yr old daughter to cancer in 2010. It is very early days for you – I still find myself catching my breath at the shock of it all sometimes. Reliving the treatments is a special kind of nightmare too. I wish you all the very best in this changed life you now have. xox
